Industrial Heritage

Industrial heritage conservation encompasses movable heritage objects from industry, engineering, communications, transport, and agriculture, as well as immovable heritage such as infrastructure, heritage buildings, and sites. It includes large technology and machinery, and may comprise electrical components, fixtures, instruments, and objects. These objects tell the rich narrative of the industrial and technological histories of society, representing the history of particular sites.

There is a significant need for the conservation of objects of industrial heritage, both in New South Wales and throughout Australia. As new technologies are adopted and eventually surpassed, this need is ever increasing as our industrial heritage collections continue to grow and require maintenance. O’Sullivan Conservation possesses a profound understanding of such projects. Our involvement ranges from condition assessment and recommendations to conservation treatment and supervision, to the specialised task of large object relocation and comprehensive conservation maintenance programs. We can also assist with conservation management plans for objects with mechanical movements, as well as preventive conservation measures.

We recognise that every project is unique, and our commitment lies in meticulously crafting treatment and maintenance proposals that resonate with our clients’ needs. Through collaboration with our clients, O’Sullivan Conservation aim for a thorough understanding of the context and significance of industrial heritage items, and whether they are intended for continued operation of the original fabric and function, for adaptive re-use, or for display. Our risk assessment processes consider health and safety, environmental and other regulatory requirements, to provide innovative solutions for the conservation of industrial heritage objects.
