Our outdoor heritage conservation services include but are not limited to – conservation of outdoor artworks, bronzes, and memorials in New South Wales and across Australia.
All projects pose unique conservation challenges which require careful assessment prior to the generation of an appropriate treatment proposal. At O’Sullivan Conservation we regularly practice a minimally interventive approach to outdoor heritage conservation that maintains the originality of each object.
Our outdoor heritage conservation services begin with an assessment of the project and the development of treatment scope in consultation with our clients. We then carry out an initial condition assessment, before cleaning, stabilising and reducing any disfiguration of the object. If necessary, any issues with existing protective coatings issues may also be addressed.
Below are some examples of services we offer:
- Condition assessments and treatment consulting
- Consolidation and conservation of deteriorating protective surface coatings
- Corrosion treatment
- Graffiti removal/reduction and surface protection
- Removal and re-application of protective surface coatings
- Sourcing and installation of replacement components
- Management of biological growth
- Development of conservation maintenance programs
We specialise in onsite treatments where restricted access, security, tight timeframes, out of hours’ work, site restrictions and protection, work permits, traffic and pedestrian management, Safe Work Method Statements and working at heights are concerned.
Bronze (Copper Alloy) Sculptures and Bas Reliefs
Treatments for bronze sculpture and bas reliefs include cleaning, corrosion treatment, repairs, filling of losses, and recasting of replica elements as well as retouching, repatination of surface finishes, and rewaxing. These works can be undertaken as an individual service or as part of a conservation maintenance program.
Cor-ten, mild steel, steel and aluminium sculptures
Sculpture restoration and conservation treatments can include conservation cleaning and maintenance, the restoration of finishes using specialist techniques, including airbrushing, repatinating, hand retouching, re-gilding, waxing, polishing, abrasive blasting and polishing; graffiti removal and structural repairs. In the case of corten and mild steel sculptures flaking corrosion can be particularly disadvantageous. Painted steel sculptures with failing paint systems can benefit from a paint match, abrasive blast, and respray to extend the life of the sculpture.
O’Sullivan Conservation draws on their wide background to approach sculpture conservation with innovative solutions, particularly when considering structural issues and methods of display.
Treatments can range from regular maintenance work to major conservation works and repairs, including waterproofing of fountain basins, repointing of stone joints, rust and corrosion treatments and conservation cleaning.
Outdoor stonework, including marble, granite and sandstone
Repairs and fabrication of missing elements to restore the appearance of your outdoor stonework is another possible component of a treatment program, with elements colour-matched for tonal variations to ensure that all repairs are practically invisible to the naked eye.
O’Sullivan Conservation also is also equipped to transport and relocate your stone objects.
“We had some tricky projects that we weren’t sure of the best way forward. I was put in touch with Eoin, he was professional, interesting and cared for our projects. Which now look amazing.”
